The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change are being held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November 2024. In addition to the Global Climate Action Summit, COP29 will feature conferences and exhibitions based on themes such as finance, energy, innovation and foods, and according to the official announcement around 70,000 participants are expected.

One of the main objectives for COP29 is the setting of new targets for climate change financing for developing countries.

As one of the activities of the contract for JICA advisory work, Asia Air Survey Co., Ltd. is supporting a side event on "Inspiring Country-Led Actions To Stop Forest Fires" on 19 November, 2024, 12:00-13:00 UTC+4, Faith Pavilion, Blue Zone, which is co-organized by UNEP-JICA.

In particular, Dr. Stevko Sefanoski, who is a counterpart of the current JICA advisory work and was a counterpart/project manager of "The Project on Capacity Building for Ecosystem Based Disaster Risk Reduction through Sustainable Forest Management in North Macedonia" (JICA Technical Cooperation from 2018 to 2023, in which AAS participated also), will give a presentation on North Macedonia's response to forest fires, while Mr. Ljuban Tmusic will introduce Montenegro’s response for forest fires who is also a counterpart of JICA project, “Capacity Building for Disaster Risk Reduction through National Forest Fire Information System (NFFIS) and Eco-DRR”.

Forest fires release huge amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere and obliterate the disaster prevention functions of forests, hampering global efforts for climate change mitigation and adaptation. In the Western Balkans, expertise through JICA projects is being used to develop national information systems that are set to improve the response to forest fires.

All participants accredited to the Blue Zone in Baku are welcome to attend this side event.

国連気候変動枠組条約（UNFCCC）第29回締約国会議（COP29）が11月11日からアゼルバイジャンのバクーで始まりました。COP29では、世界気候行動サミットに加えて、金融やエネルギー、イノベーション、食糧などの各テーマに沿って会議や展示が実施され、公式発表では約7万人の参加者が見込まれています。

COP29の主な論点としては、途上国への気候変動対策資金に関する新規目標の設定が挙げられます。

当社は、COP29において、11月29日にJICAとUNEPが共同開催する森林火災に関するサイドイベントについて、JICAより受注した業務の一環として実施支援しています。

本イベントでは、現在JICAアドバイザリー業務のカウンターパートであり、JICA「北マケドニア国における持続的な森林管理を通じた、生態系を活用した防災・減災（Eco-DRR）能力構築プロジェクト」（2017年から2023年までのJICA技術協力。当社もJV代表として参加）のカウンターパートも務めたStevko Sefanoski博士が北マケドニアの森林火災への対応についてプレゼンテーションを行い、モンテネグロでJICAが現在実施中の「国家森林火災情報システム（NFFIS）とEco-DRRによる災害リスク削減のための能力強化プロジェクト」のカウンターパートであるリュバン・トゥムシッチ氏が、モンテネグロの森林火災への対応について紹介します。

森林火災は大量のCO2を大気中に放出し、森林の防災機能を破壊し、気候変動の緩和と適応に向けた世界的な取り組みを妨げています。西バルカン諸国では、森林火災への対応を改善するための国家情報システムの開発に、JICA プロジェクトを通じた専門知識が活用されています。
